The short answer is yes – you may not look the best right away, but you will be able to see, but swelling will vary from patient to patient. Your eyelids will be puffy, your incisions may appear red, and the swelling and bruising may resemble a black eye.

Whether you’re seeking the medical benefits of the procedure or simply want a more rested appearance, you’ll benefit from the artistic approach of board-certified Dr. Mark Karolak. Trusted by thousands of facial plastic surgery patients, Dr. Karolak offers compassion and support before, during, and after the procedure.

What Are My Options?

There are two types of blepharoplasty: upper and lower. Upper lid surgery addresses excess tissue, which can impair vision, and corrects chronic puffiness or sagging skin. Lower lid surgery most commonly addresses bulging, baggy skin under the eyes. Dr. Karolak performs both procedures under local anesthetic, which means you won’t experience the groggy effects and risks associated with general anesthesia.

In some cases, Dr. Karolak may suggest combining the procedures to achieve the results you want. Combination procedures enhance results and cut recovery time in half.

In addition to general risks associated with surgery, there are possible risks related to eyelid surgery. Some patients may experience an injury to their eye muscles or have difficulty closing their eyes. Dr. Karolak will explain how these risks may or may not apply to you.

What Can I Expect During Recovery?

Many patients experience immediate rejuvenation after the procedure. If you don’t notice improvements right away, rest assured – results will continue to improve for several weeks. Your eyelids may be bruised or swollen, and you may temporarily experience blurred or double vision, light sensitivity, or puffy eyelids with little to no pain.

Recovery from blepharoplasty is relatively straightforward but can vary based on the extent of your surgery and overall health. Most patients feel comfortable returning to work and daily activities within 1-2 weeks. Many patients feel comfortable leaving the house with sunglasses on after 2-3 days.

Some general recovery recommendations:

  • Use a cold compress to reduce swelling
  • Keep water and other irritants out of your eyes
  • Get plenty of rest; you may be more tired than usual
  • Minimize screen-time for one week

Dr. Karolak will provide you with a comprehensive post-surgical recovery plan and, if needed, medicine to help with pain and discomfort.

I had upper blepharoplasty surgery performed by Dr. Karolak. I am so pleased with the results which far exceeded my expectations. I interviewd several plastic surgeons but Dr. Karolak spent the time and attention I needed to explain te procedure and answer all of my questions.
