An eyelid lift, or blepharoplasty, is a procedure designed to remove excess skin and fat from the eyelids to refresh your appearance. Excess fat can gather above and below your eyelids as you age, contributing to under-eye bags and droopy upper lids.

Upper blepharoplasty surgery addresses heavy-looking eyelids, puffiness, and an impaired field of vision. Lower eyelid surgery improves the contour of the eyelid and improves puffy under-eye bags. Patients can have surgery done on their upper lid, lower lid, or combine both into one procedure.

Combining procedures cuts your recovery time in half and adds to your overall improved appearance. When performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Mark Karolak, patients can expect a short, manageable recovery period.

What Can I Expect After Surgery?

Each patient will recover at their own pace, but the extent of your surgery will contribute to how long your body will need to heal. Following this outpatient surgery, some patients experience temporarily blurred vision. You should arrange to have someone pick you up after your procedure.

Other short-lived side effects include:

  • Light sensitivity
  • Itchy, dry, or sticky eyes
  • Tightness or soreness at the incision site

Some swelling and bruising are normal for up to three weeks post-surgery. Most patients feel comfortable returning to work after two weeks of rest and recovery, though bruising around the eyes may still be present.  Many patients feel comfortable leaving the house with sunglasses on after 2-3 days.

What Results Can I Expect?

Although results may be obscured by bruising and swelling immediately following the procedure, you can expect to see changes within several weeks as the swelling subsides. Continued improvements are typical for up to three months. Some patients only require one procedure in a lifetime, enjoying a lasting boost to their self-confidence. Others may need to repeat the surgery in the future to combat the natural aging process and maintain their youthful appearance.
